Interview With Chad Gibbs

Chad Gibbs stopped by this week to talk about Auburn's National Championship, Cam Newton's legacy, and how passionate Christians should be about football. Chad is the author of God and Football. You can catch up with him at www.chadgibbs.com.
The Scandal: How are you feeling after Auburn's first championship in more than fifty years?

Chad Gibbs: I'm feeling pretty good. It was an amazing season, something I wasn't sure I'd ever get to see, and for it all to happen the year my book released made it extra special.

The Scandal: Be honest--did you ever say a quick prayer during the game?

Chad Gibbs: Not that I recall, although there were plenty of chances this season since so many games came down to the last minute. I may have said a prayer the night before the Iron Bowl, but the question was 'during the game'

The Scandal: Will you be buying a Cam Newton or Nick Fairley NFL jersey this summer?

Chad Gibbs: Probably not. I'm not really a big NFL fan, but will certainly keep up with their pro careers. I'd be much more likely to buy a Michael Dyer jersey so I can wear it to Auburn games the next three seasons.

The Scandal: How will the controversy surrounding Cam Newton color this season for Auburn?

Chad Gibbs: It just added more drama to an already overly dramatic season. For me personally it was a low point. The uncertainty of Newton's status which cast uncertainty on the entire season made for some anxious nights, and I hate to admit how much time I wasted worrying about it. But I believe most Auburn fans think the school did what was right, and the championship trophy will still be in our trophy case ten years from now, despite message board rumors.

The Scandal: How can Christians who are football fans get to a point where they don't live or die on whether their team wins on Saturdays?

Chad Gibbs: The key for me was realizing it is only a game, and my worth as a person is the same when Auburn is 14-0 as it is when Auburn is 0-14. I think this season I was able to enjoy football more than I ever have because I wasn't looking to it to fill some void in my life. Of course Auburn winning the national championship didn't hurt.

The Scandal: Some people say that Christians shouldn't be so fanatical about football. How can we explain to them our love of Christ and football?

Chad Gibbs: In a way they are right, and if football has become an idol then certainly you need to take a step back and reevaluate the situation. But I do believe someone can love Christ and still act a fool in the stands on Saturday.

The Scandal: Any plans for a new book?

Chad Gibbs: I've just begun work on a book called A Time To Hate, which will look at hate, racism and sectarianism through the lens of sports greatest rivalries. In the next thirty days I'll be seeing Lakers vs. Celtics, Duke vs. Carolina, and Rangers v. Celtic soccer in Glasgow, Scotland. It's a fun project, and hopefully will be a fun read.
